Vernon Hills, Ill. – The Robert Morris Men's Bowling team won its second consecutive NAIA National Invitational Tournament title on Sunday, March 30th, defeating Midland University 3-1 in the championship match. The tournament was held March 28th-30th at the Brunswick Zone Hawthorn in Vernon Hills, Illinois.
The tournament featured the top 20 NAIA teams and all teams bowled 24 Baker games of qualifying to determine the 20-team, double elimination bracket. After qualifying, the Eagles were in fifth place and opened tournament play versus Pikeville College (Ky.), who they defeated 3-2 to receive a bye in the next round. Next up, the Eagles knocked off Mount Mercy College (Iowa) 3-2 to gain another bye in the tournament and closed out Saturday's action with a 3-0 victory over Lindenwood University-Belleville.
By virtue of its win over Lindenwood-Belleville, RMU received another bye on Sunday morning and defeated Midland University (Neb.) 3-0 to advance to the championship match as the only undefeated team in the men's division. The Eagles squared off against Midland once again, and defeated the Warriors 3-1 to win their second straight NAIA National Invitational Tournament championship.
The NAIA All-American teams were also announced at an awards banquet on Friday, March 28th and four Eagles were selected. Marshall Kent and Cameron Weier were NAIA All-American First team selections, while teammates Matt Gasn and Ryan Zagar were named to the NAIA All-American Second team. Head Coach Dale Lehman was also a finalist for NAIA Coach of the Year honors. All award honorees are pictured below.
RMU will now prepare for the USBC Intercollegiate National Championships in Reno, Nevada from April 13th-18th. The Eagles are looking to defend their title that they had won in 2013.
