The 13th ranked Robert Morris Illinois Football team was on the road facing #5 Marian (Ind.) in a rematch of the NAIA National Tournament last year, on Saturday September 9th.   The Eagles fell 49-28 in the rematch.

Marian received the opening kickoff and marched right down the field on the RMU defense scoring a touchdown on a 17-yard pass on a 10 play, 71 yard drive taking 3:10 off the clock.

On RMU's first drive of the game, Kenyatte Allen (SR/Lithonia, Ga.) connected with Tristen Jeffries (SR/Sandusky, Ohio) for a 15 yard gain and first down but RMU was unable to get another first down.  A fumble on the punt led to Marian taking over at the RMU 23-yard line.  Marian capitalized in just five plays scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run to take a 14-0 lead.

Eagles would respond marching down the first in 9 plays to get within 7, on a Darius Burse (JR/Chicago, Ill.) 8-yard touchdown run.  A long 23 yard pass to Michael Berry (SO/Beavercreek, Ohio) put RMU in the red zone.

The defenses found their groves with six of the next eight drives ending in punts.  Kenyatte Allen was intercepted, but on the ensuing drive Montreal Blade (FR/Homewood, Ill.) was able to come up with the Marian fumble to get the ball back to Allen.

Marian was able to strike again on 4 plays, including two long runs, scoring on a 20-yard rush to take a 21-7 lead in the second quarter.

RMU answered again, with Kenyatte Allen finding Tristen Jeffries for the 3-yard touchdown reception to bring the Eagles to within 21-14 just before the end of the half.  The drive was 13 plays spanning 66 yards in 4:49.

Eagles looked to take the momentum to end the half into the third quarter, but the offense went three and out.  Marian took advantage scoring in just five plays going 62 yards, ending with a 14-yard rush to extend their lead to 28-14.

Marian was able to connect on a long 52-yard pass setting up a 6-yard touchdown run to lead 35-14 in the third quarter.

Just before the end of the third quarter Ian Riggs (SR/Rockford, Ill.) forced a fumble recovered by Will Nicholson (SR/Corona, Calif.).  RMU drove down to the Marian 6-yard line but was turned away on downs.

As the fourth quarter began, Marian's passing game struck again this time a 60 yard bomb bringing the lead to 42-14.

The Eagles answered quickly, Kenyatte Allen went 4-5 on the five play drive, connecting with Keith Franklin (FR/Franklin Park, Ill.) for a big 48-yard gain, then two plays later finding him again for the 16-yard touchdown to bring RMU within 42-21.

RMU tried an onside kick unsuccessfully and Marian capitalized on the great field position scoring in five plays on a 14-yard touchdown pass to bring the lead to 49-21.   The RMU passing attack continued to click with Kenyatte Allen finding Jalen Smith (SR/Muskegon, Mich.) for 23 yards and 22 yards on consecutive plays.  Finishing the drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Antwan Morrison (SR/Maywood, Ill.) to bring the Eagles closer down 49-28.

Those would be the last points of the game and the Eagles fell to Marian 49-28 dropping to 1-2 overall.

RMU was led defensively by Philip Hassell (SR/Champaign, Ill.) with 12 tackles, Dallis Flower added 8 tackles, Ian Riggs continued his strong season with 2 sacks and another forced fumble.  Offensively, Kenyatte Allen finished 22-44 for 298 yards, 3 touchdowns, and one pick while rushing 19 times for 52 yards.  Darius Burse rushed 11 times for 33 yards.  Keith Franklin led receivers with four catches for 92 yards and a touchdown.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday September 16th back at Morris Field versus Siena Heights University (Mich.). Kickoff is set for 2pm and fans can listen and watch to the game live on the Eagles Sports Network.
