Men's Hockey White-CH - Tue, Aug. 1, 2017

RMU Hockey is pleased to announce that Russell Urekar-Balys has been named as the assistant coach to the ACHA D3 White Hockey Team.

Urekar-Balys, who will be assisting head coach Paul Isleib, played junior hockey in the GLJHL for Kalkaskia and Indianapolis.  He played at the collegiate level for RMU's D2 Maroon team. He will work primarily with the team's defense and oversee their off-ice conditioning.

"I'm excited to join the RMU coaching staff so I can help instill the areas I think are important for defensemen to master," Urekar-Balys stated. "I want my D to know to back each other up at the offensive blue line, in the neutral zone and especially in our end. I learned from my former coach, Rocky Trottier, that it's all about skating. Once you master that, everything becomes easier. In one-on-one situations, I want our D to keep their heads up and to force the attacker to go where we want them to go. If you're a good skater, that's something you can control." Urekar-Balys' noted that these simple fundamentals were the keys to the success of his favorite NHL defenseman, Nicklas Lidstrom.

"Russell will be a very good fit for what we want to do," said head coach Isleib. "His playing background and knowledge are a great compliment to what I bring, and it's essential that we give our team a solid foundation as we rebuild it.  We want to make teaching the game our priority."
